WNBA Roundup (May 5) – Valkyries cut Sellers, Caitlin Clark reclaims Iowa court

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Caitlin Clark was back playing at her old stomping grounds at the University of Iowa on Sunday, in a 108-44 exhibition win over the Brazilian National Team. In front of a sold-out crowd. Clark scored 16 points, dished out 5 assists and pulled down 6 rebounds in the blowout, playing in the first time in over 200 days. Clark brought the house down by banging a half court 3-pointer with 26.1 seconds left in the third quarter.

After the exhibition, members of the Brazilian national team were seen seeking autographs from the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year. The moment gave some basketball historians flashbacks to the US Men’s National Team in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona and how NBA players brought wows from fans and opponents alike.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Prior to playing their inaugural game, the WNBA’s newest expansion team has announced they’ve released rookie Shyanne Sellers. Sellers was a projected 1st round pick, according to ESPN.com, but fell to the second round to Golden State with the 17th overall selection. Sellers was a three-year starter for the University of Maryland. In her senior season, the 6-2 guard averaged 14.4 points and 4.1 assists per game and shot .478/.408/.868 (FG/3pt/FT).

Sellers is just one of several cuts to come as the WNBA teams scramble to trim their teams down to the limit of 12 players prior to the beginning of the regular season on May 16. As of May 5 at 9:37 AM PDT, the Golden State Valkyries roster still listed 18 players. Many WNBA franchises opt to cut rosters down to 11 players to keep space available in case of injuries.
